Hello, We live in a house in with a contract until 31. Sept 2018. However, due to bills being much higher than expected, we'd like to move out ASAP. Our contract says we need to give notice 3 months before moving out. Does this mean we can move out 3 months after we give the notice even though it's before the 31. Of sept OR does it mean that we need to give a notice 3 months before 31 sept that we're not prolonging the contract?

The tenant has a right to end the tenancy with a three month notice, provided that the tenant uses the house as his or her home. This is the case even though the contract with the landlord might state otherwise (12 kap. 5 § Jordabalken).

What this means in your case is that if you give the notice in the end of this month (January) the contract will expire after three months. It does not mean that you are bound by the contract until 31.9.2018 and are obliged to give the notice three months before that date.
